While rumours of an upgraded Samsung Galaxy S II - which swaps the 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos application processor of the current model for a beefier 1.4GHz version - have yet to be confirmed by the company, it has surprised the market with a launch in the opposite direction: the Samsung Galaxy Z.
Designed as a cut-down, cheaper equivalent to the flagship Galaxy S II, the Galaxy Z takes the existing design and replaces some of the components with lower-spec equivalents. The 4.2in display is a Super Clear LCD, rather than the high-spec Super AMOLED Plus used on the Galaxy S II, as an example. The processor has also been downgraded from 1.2GHz to 1GHz - interestingly enough, the speed at which the Galaxy S II was originally rumoured to be launching.
The 8-megapixel camera with Xenon flash has been replaced with a 5-megapixel model with LED flash, although the front-mounted camera for video calling makes the transition intact. Auto-focus and HD video recording are both supported, and the FM radio of the Galaxy S II is still present.
3G connectivity is included, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, and 8GB of storage - down from 16GB in the Galaxy S II, although an internal microSD slot makes this easy to upgrade. Measuring 125.3mm x 66.1mm x 9.45mm and weighing 135g, it's slightly thicker than the Galaxy S II and features a brushed finish to the battery cover, which now doesn't reach right to the top of the display.
